Soldiers Pay

(David O. Russell, Tricia Regan & Juan Carlos Zaldívar, USA , 2004)

Made by David O. Russell in collaboration with Tricia Regan and Juan Carlos Zaldívar, Soliders Pay has gained notoriety by being refused by Warner Brothers as an extra on the Three Kings (1999) DVD.

This attention is deserved. This forty-minute piece is a tight, powerful compendium of mainly eye-witness testimonies concerning the behaviour of American soldiers in Iraq.

The net result of so many horror stories is complex: we come to grasp not only the brutality of these men, but also the ways in which the process of war or invasion brutalises them in turn.
